“Aunt Lizzie” Aiken from Peoria volunteered in 1861 as a nurse for the head surgeon of the The Sixth Illinois Calvalry at Shawneetown, called the “Gov. Yates Legion.” She wore no uniform and had no rank or title so when a private asked the surgeon, "What do we call this kind lady?" The surgeon replied, "Aunt Lizzie, we just call her Aunt Lizzie."
