Dr. William Bissell

Dr. William Bissell was a veteran of the Mexican War who practiced medicine in Monroe County. In 1856 he was the first member of the new Republican Party to be elected governor of Illinois when he ran on an anti-slavery platform. He did not live out his term and died in office in 1860.
