Reception for President Grant on Jan. 6, 1871

This invitation shows the Illinois club briefly returned to a partisan label after the election of President Grant in 1868 because many members worked as government clerks for the Grant Administration. But the word Democratic was inserted briefly duing the administration of President Grover Cleveland and most of the time newspapers in DC just referred to the club as the Illinois State Association from 1867 to 1917.
