James Shields was and Army officer and politician who was born in County Tyrone, Ireland. He was Governor of the Oregon Territory before becoming the junior senator from Illinois in 1849. He once threatened to duel with Lincoln but the two later became friends. He was the only person to serve at different times as a U.S. Senator from three different states, Illinois 1849-1855, Minnesota 1858-1859, and Missouri for a few months in 1879.
