Kennesaw Mountain

Kennesaw Mountain

The official Illinois State Song adopted in 1925 includes this verse, "When you heard your country calling, Illinois, Illinois, when the shot and shell were falling, Illinois, Illinois, when the Southern Host withdrew, pitting Gray against the Blue, there were none more brave than you, Illinois."

This is the Illinois Monument at the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield in Kennesaw, Ga. It is the largest monument on the battlefield. Out of the 4000 men who died during this battle, 500 of them were from Illinois. Thats why this monument was erected. (Photo by Scott Mitchell)
