On January 6, 1871 the Illinois State Association hosted a large reception in this Masonic Temple building located on the corner of 9th and F Streets, NW, in Washington, DC. The building had a huge conference hall and it served as the convention center of its day. President Ulyses S. Grant, who for many years owned a home in Galena, Illinois with his wife Julia Dent Grant, was the guest of honor at this reception. But he was not the principal speaker. That honor fell to Congressman Norman B. Judd of Illinois. President Grant headed the receiving line. The building now serves as an annex to the next building which is the headquarters for the Gallup Polling Organization.
