Lincoln penny of 1909

Lincoln penny of 1909

The Lincoln penny design by Victor D. Brenner replaced the Indian Head penny in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. It was the first time the the U.S. Mint put the face of a president on a coin. Later in the century, Jefferson was put on the nickle, Washington on the quarter, Benjamin Franklin on the half-dollar coin, and President John F. Kennedy later replaced Franklin on the fifty-cent coin. For a brief time around 2003, Lincoln appeared on both the reverse side of the Illinois state quarter as well as on the penny.
