Richard Sears was a watch salesman from Minnesota who moved to Chicago about 1887. He placed an ad in the Chicago Daily News for a watchmaker and in two days hired Alvah Roebuck of Indiana. They formed the Sears-Roebuck mail order catalog business in 1893 in Chicago. The giant company now has more than 5,000 stores under different brands plus the mail-order and internet-order business. It is still called Sears, Roebuck but the stores are just called Sears Stores. The company is still based in Illinois in 2006.
