Adlai Ewing Stevenson of Bloomington, Illinois served as Vice President of the United States with President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897. His son was Illinois Secretary of State Louis Stevenson. His grandson was Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson II who served as governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953 and who lost two elections for president to Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956. His great-grandson was US Senator Adlai E. Stevenson, III who represented Illinois from 1971 to 1981 and who lost two elections for governor to Gov. James R. Thompson in 1982 and 1986.
