1905 Statue of Frances Willard Dedicated

Frances Willard, the famous suffragette and temperance crusader, and the first Dean of Women at Northwestern University, died in 1898. In 1905, Illinois dedicated its second statue in the US Capitol Building to Willard, who was the first woman honored in this way. The statue remained the only statue of a woman until 1958 when a female educator from Minnesota was honored in a similar way.
