The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929 was part of a prohibition era war between the south side Italian gang of Al Capone vs. the north-side gang of Bugs Moran for control of bootleg liquore territory in the city. The murederers dressed as police officers when the looked for Moran in a garage on north Clark Street but he was not there. The attack shocked the nation and caused Chicago business leaders to eventually form The Secret Six to help take down Al Capone so the image of gangters ruling the streets of Chicago with machine guns would not scare away families who might want to attend the planned World's Fair in 1933.
