The events of the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC in the 1920s were often reported as society news in both the Washington Post and The Chicago Daily Tribune because of the social prominance of Vice President and Mrs. Dawes and Senator and Mrs. Deneen when Senator Deneen was president of the society. He was also news in Illinois because not only was he a senator but he was a former governor from 1905 to 1913. Vice President Dawes had shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1925 and both of his brothers William and Rufus Dawes were important business leaders in Chicago.
