Two lawyers with Illinois roots faced off at the "monkey trial" of John Scopes vs. Tennessee in 1925. Clarence Darrow at left was a Chicago labor lawyer who defended Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb in their sensational murder trial. William Jennings Bryan at right was born in Salem, Illinois and he graduated as valectorian from Illinois College and attended the Union College of Law (now Northwestern University Law School). He was nominated three times for president by the Democratic Party and in 1900 his running mate was former Vice President Adlai Stevenson from Bloomington, Illinois.
