Artist conception of Lindy over Illinois 1926

In 1926, Robertson Aircraft in St. Louis hired Charles Lindbergh as pilot and supervisor of Contract Air Mail Route No. 2 from Maywood to Peoria to Springfield to St. Louis for five round-trips every week in a World War I British DH-4.

The weather was good from April until September and the mail was delivered on time. But Lindbergh parachuted twice in bad weather while two of his planes crashed on Illinois farms near Bloomington and Ottawa.
