State Senator Lottie O'Neill

Rep. Lottie Holman O'Neill (R-DownersGrove) was the first woman to be elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1922. Lottie was also the first woman elected to the State Senate in 1950. Many years after her death in 1967, this statue was placed in her honor in the rotunda of the State Capitol in Springfield. She authored and passed a law to require that 8th Grade Students in Illinois pass an exam on the State Constitution.
