Congressman Henry Riggs Rathbone was president of the Illinois State Society 1927 – 1928.
His parents were Maj. Henry Rathbone and his then fiance Clara Harris. Clara was the daughter of Sen. Ira C. Harris of New York. They were the couple that sat in the box at Ford’s Theater with President and Mrs. Lincoln on April 14, 1865 when John Wilkes Booth killed the president.
Congressman Rathbone did not complete his one-year term as president of the Illinois State Society because he died suddenly in Chicago in June 1928. Sen. Charles Deneen, who had also served as Governor of Illinois from 1905 to 1913, was elected as the new president of the Illinois State Society to replace Rathbone in that post until December of 1930.
