For almost 40 years, the Illinois State Society was known in Washington, DC for its monthly dances at major hotels from the 1920s to the 1960s. While dancing fell out of favor in the television age, the Illinois State Society revived its reputation for major dances with its Inaugural Gala in 1989 and some subsequent Inaugural dances that featured the world-famous Lester Lanin Orchestra.
