Forty-three hours before the attack, about 400 people in Washington were attending a monthly dance sponsored by the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC.

Chris Kimble, Bunny Knupp, and Ruth Crowdy pictured above got to the Illinois State Society dance late on Friday night, December 5, 1941. Just a few blocks away from the dance at the Wardman Park Hotel, special Japanese envoys Nomura and Kurusu were expecting a long cable from Tokyo in fourteen parts. The last part was slated for delivery to Secretary of State Cordell Hull at exactly 1 PM on Sunday, Dec. 7.
