Illinois Cherry Blossom Princess Katherine Springer rides with her court on the Illinois State Society Float as it proceeds west on Independence Avenue for the 1963 National Cherry Blossom Parade.
For about 18 years the Illinois State Society and other state societies sponsored their own floats in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade to feature the state cherry blossom princess. In the 1950s the parade was at night along K Street, NW and the route was lighted by open stores and street lights. But in the 1960s, due to changes in K Street, the parade moved to Independence Avenue, SW south of The White House and the Ellipse from 7th Street to 17th Street, NW. This 1963 Illinois State Society float is shown on the Independence Avenue, SW parade route.
