John F. Kennedy

Senator John F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) had many close allies in Chicago for his 1960 campaign for president including Mayor Richard J. Daley and JFK's brother-in-law R. Sargent Shriver who managed the Merchandise Mart and was President of the Chicago School Board for many years before JFK asked Shriver to be the first Director of the Peace Corps in 1961. Sargent Shriver and Mrs. Shriver were very active members of the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC in the 1960s and they hosted summer picnics for the society at their estate near Rockville, Maryland.
