1977 Patricia Robert Harris

Patricia Roberts Harris was born in Mattoon in 1924. She graduated from Englewood High School and took post-graduate studies at the University of Chicago. She was the first African American woman to serve as a U.S. Ambassador overseas and the first to serve in the cabinet of President Carter in 1977.
