Gene Cernan

CAPT Eugene Cernan, USN-ret, was the spacecraft commander of Apollo 17, was the last man to walk on the moon in December 1972 when he landed at Taurus-Littrow aboard the Challenger lunar module. He was also the first and only Illinois native to walk on the moon. He was raised in Bellwood, Illinois and attended Proviso East High School. On Jan. 19, 2001, Congressman Ray LaHood of Peoria presented the Outstanding Illinoisan Award to Cernan at the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC Inaugural Gala at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
