On January 19, 1981, The Illinois State Society of Washington, DC hosted an Inaugural Reception to honor Reagan who was born in Tampico, Illinois in 1911. He was the third president from Illinois along with Lincoln and Grant. The Illinois State Society Gala was held at The International Club at 1800 K Street on Jan. 19 for about 1,000 guests. A few months later, Reagan was coming out of the Hilton Hotel when both he and White House Press Secretary Jim Brady were shot. Brady was supposed to crown Marta Strom, the Illinois Cherry Blossom Princess that week but he could not attend because he was in serious condition in the hospital. Secret Service Agent Tim McCarthy from Cook County was also wounded seriously. All recovered but for long-term damage to Brady's brain.
