Congressman Bob Michel at left and R. Sargent Shriver at right were both honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at The White House in 1994. Both men were active members and leaders of The Illinois State Society of Washington, DC in the 1960s. Bob Michel went on to serve as Chairman of he Evertt M. Dirksen Center in Peoria and Sargent Shriver became Chairman of the Special Olympics. Shriver was married to Eunice Shriver Kennedy who was a sister to President John F. Kennedy. Shriver managed the Merchandise Mart in Chicago in the 1950s and served as Chairman of the Chicago School Board for five years when Richard J. Daley was mayor of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Shriver became active members of the Illinois State Society in 1961 when he was named as Director of the Peace Corps and more than once the Shrivers hosted picnics for the Illinois State Society members at their estate near Rockville, Maryland.
