All members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation from both parties attended the nonpartisan 2005 Illinois State Society Inaugural Gala in honor of the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. The tradition dates back to the 1861 Inauguration of President Lincoln. But no one had any idea on that night of Jan. 19, 2005 that a future President and First Lady were seated at the dinner. Newly elected Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) and Mrs. Michelle Obama were part of that nonpartisan Illinois tradition that night and even though many guests were Republicans from Illinois and the East Coast, Senator Obama posed for pictures with hundreds of guests as did Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL.) and the Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.
